The role of consulting in the logistics industry
2 June 2023The first quarter of 2023 is drawing to a close. The year kicked off and the first developments occurred. What predicted trends are continuing to evolve? What factors are affecting the market and can we forecast the further progression of these trends? You can read about this and more in this article on the logistics trends of 2023!
Technologies
Rising costs call for efficiency. More often than not, companies choose to automate warehouse processes as much as possible. Where multiple people used to pick orders, now a robot can do the job. If the capital is available for investment, this is highly beneficial in the long term. Automation is not limited to warehouses. One of the other areas where significant automation has been implemented is inland shipping. After ten years of development, the ‘Nextlogic’ system is ready for use. This system was officially launched this year and there is a clear goal to have 100% of container transport by inland vessels in the Port of Rotterdam scheduled through Nextlogic by the end of the year.
Sustainability
In addition to the focus on automation, there is also increasing pressure for sustainability in logistics, particularly in shipping. This raises certain questions, such as how to involve retailers and major players without placing all the costs on the shipping companies? Ultimately, sustainability is a shared process and for it to be successful, every actor in the supply chain needs to collaborate. Real collaboration within the chain is essential. These aren’t just alternatives for inland shipping; it is also necessary for sea and air transport to fully leverage their potential.
Sustainability also leads to an increased demand for local products. Is it really necessary to source products from far away when good local alternatives are available? Where can we collectively do better? Is it possible to deliver products in a climate-neutral way? How can we make logistics more sustainable? What initiatives are already in place, and what new ideas can we develop and implement in the short term? These are compelling questions that we hope will receive significant attention in 2023.
Staff shortages
The shortage of personnel is not a new phenomenon. It has been an issue for several years, affecting not only the logistics and transport sector but also other industries and all levels of organisations. How can we attract and retain talented people? Ideas and employment conditions are becoming more creative. How can we, as logistics professionals, inspire new talent to choose a career in the logistics sector? Attractive secondary benefits, a good work-life balance and opportunities for growth can all play a role in this.
